Analog Music in the Digital Age

I’m a real live dinosaur:  No, not the snarling mass of muscle and teeth like in the Jurassic Park movies that I love so much.

A musical dinosaur; that lives and works in the digital age.

Bowie, Pink Floyd, The Beatles and Rush all spinning in their classic vinyl form on a Technics turntable and pumping out of a Bose desktop speaker system.  I work and play on my various Apple products and game systems.

All the while I’m emerged in the digital world I’m tethered to the smooth full sound of analog.

It can be done!  In fact more and more people are doing it and transforming into dinosaurs like me.  Vinyl sales hit a 28 year high of $416 Million.  That is more than other digital formats like cd’s and Spotify by roughly $50 Million!  Even cassettes are moving up to $10 Million last year and growing every year.

I know I know.  But Randy?  You’re telling me you don’t listen to music digitally?  THANK YOU FOR BRINGING UP A SORE SUBJECT!  Sorry, I’m sensitive about that question.

Of course I do, as technology has failed to produce a record player for a Jeep or one I can walk or run with!  And flying cars….where are the flying cars!?!?!?  But I digress.  Digital music ushered in the age of the single and the “hits” and lost track of the concept of an album.  And let’s face it, you don’t have time to listen to the entire Dark Side of the Moon on your way to work. But cranking “Money” or “Breathe” on your car stereo, CD or iPhone is certainly how you can get your day started.

Play music from your iPod to get you through a busy work day.  Then repeat step one.  But when you get home.  Peel off your hard work day at the door.  Find your spot with a calming beverage and put on a vinyl album that transports you from that digital age…..right back into the age of the dinosaurs.
