I Love You!

I do love you but not in the way you think.

Who wouldn’t want to hear those words!  ILOVEYOU! This was the title of emails sent to millions of people in May, 2000.

This was a worm that was spread by email, the Subject Line “ILOVEYOU” had a single attachment : LOVE-LETTER-FORYOU.txt.vbs.

If you were infected it sent it to everyone in your address book and then proceeded to overwrite all word documents and photographs on your computer.

Windows hid the file extensions .txt and .vbs so that most users thought they were opening a slightly creepy letter from their Uncle Frank instead of a virus that would wipe out all of their memories and documents – and email everyone they knew as well!

To this day hackers exploit the social aspect of communications to breach corporate security.

Here is a typical email that is so tempting to those type A finance folks – it even seems like its coming from Quickbooks.

Here is another where it appears we missed an important delivery!

Lets dissect one so you can see how dangerous these can be

It all depends on you!  As your IT team we work hard to protect you and your business, but there is one person we can’t protect it from completely – and that person is you!

The most dangerous viral activity we see right now is ransomware. It encrypts any file you have access to anywhere on your network! It all starts with a single word document download and once you click through a couple of warnings – off it goes.

If you see something – say something – thats the anti-terrorism stance we are in as a country.

The same applies to your computer – don’t open an odd email and then leave for the day when it starts acting up – report it right away if you think you may have opened up some suspicious website or attachment.

We can almost always trace the source of an infection down to a computer and a user account!

If you see something – say something! Forward any suspicious emails to us and we will investigate [email protected] or hit us up with your tray icon or by chat on the website!

I Love You (TRULY)

Eric
